  • Besan cheela is a healthy and tasty pancake made with gram flour (besan) with Indian little spices.
  • A basic cheela recipe would be with just the spices sans any onions or tomatoes. there are a number of variations that can be done to a basic chilla recipe.
  • Besan cheela is one of the quick breakfast or brunch or evening snack one can make. You just need to mix everything and prepare the cheela. these besan chilla also make for a healthy tiffin box snack.
  • Some people also refer these as vegetarian omelette, meaning it kinds of looks same without the egg.
  • Making besan ka chilla is easy and quick, there’s no waiting time. You only mix everything together and then make the chilla.
  • Besan Chilla is an easy and quick Indian savory pancake, that is made with chickpea flour and can be prepared in under 15 minutes.
  • This is an instant Breakfast recipe, that doesn’t require any fermentation like Dosas.



  • 100 Gram besan (Chickpea Flour)
  • Half cup warm water
  • 1 small onion finely chopped 
  • 1 finely chopped tomatoe
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds or ajwain 
  • Half tsp chilli powder
  • Half tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1 small handful fresh coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Oil, as needed


Place the besan in a large mixing bowl with the spices. Chop the onion, tomatoe and fresh coriander and add it in.

● Do chop all the above ingredients finely. If chopped even in slightly large pieces, it becomes difficult to spread the chilla in the pan.

●Add 1/2 cup water.

Start adding water little by little while whisking continuously to form a thick batter of pouring consistency.

It should not be runny but it should not be very thick either. It should have a pouring consistency.

Heat a iron tawa or Non stick pan on medium heat. Once the pan is heat, take a ladle full of the batter.

And pour it on hot tawa. Move the ladle in circular motion to spread the batter on the tawa.

It should be a round circle like a dosa shape.

Pour around 1Tsp  oil around the edges of the chilla and cook it until it turn golden brown and crisp.

● Flip the chilla carefully after a few minutes and then cook the other side .

Repeat until all your batter’s gone. Enjoy hot and crispy.

●The besan chilla is ready for you! You can have it with green chutney,sauce or pickles.
